How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last? (And How to Make Them Last Longer)

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last? (And How to Make Them Last Longer)

One of the first questions people ask about dermal fillers is how long the results will last. The honest answer is: it depends. Most fillers last somewhere between 6 and 24 months, and where yours lands in that range comes down to a few key factors. Here's what to expect.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Most dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance your skin already produces to stay hydrated and plump. When it's injected into specific areas, filler restores lost volume, smooths lines, and adds definition. Results are visible right away, with any minor swelling settling within a few days.

At Le Spa, we carry seven filler brands, including Juvéderm, Restylane, RHA, and Belotero, so your provider can match the product to each area of your face.

How Long Fillers Last by Area

Areas that move a lot tend to break down filler faster than areas that move less. As a general guide:

  • Lips: often around 6 to 12 months, since the mouth is always moving
  • Smile lines and marionette lines: commonly about 9 to 12 months
  • Cheeks, chin, and jawline: often 12 months or longer, sometimes up to about 2 years with firmer products
  • Under-eyes (tear troughs): can last a year or more because the area moves less

These are typical ranges, not guarantees. Your provider will tell you what to expect for your treatment plan.

What Affects How Long Filler Lasts?

  • The product: thicker, firmer fillers designed for structure usually last longer than softer fillers made for fine lines and lips.
  • The treatment area: more movement means faster breakdown.
  • Your metabolism: everyone breaks down hyaluronic acid at a slightly different rate.
  • Lifestyle: frequent intense exercise, sun exposure, and smoking can all shorten results.
  • Amount used: a fuller correction may last longer than a very light touch.

How to Make Your Fillers Last Longer

  • Wear sunscreen daily. UV exposure speeds up the breakdown of collagen and hyaluronic acid.
  • Stay hydrated and use good skincare. Healthy, hydrated skin helps results look their best.
  • Follow aftercare. Avoid strenuous exercise, heat, and alcohol for the first 24 to 48 hours, or as your provider advises.
  • Plan touch-ups. A small top-up before your filler fully fades often takes less product than starting over.
  • Combine treatments. Botox can relax the muscles around an area, and collagen stimulators like Sculptra and Radiesse build longer-term support. Your provider can tell you if pairing makes sense.

What If You Don't Like Your Results?

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if needed. That flexibility is one reason they're such a popular choice. Our approach is to enhance your features, never overfill, so you still look like you, just refreshed.
